Construction and Installation of a Super Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance (SID) Monitor at Owerri for monitoring Solar Flares.

Innovations Item Code: 4d528377a9

Stage of Innovation: Proof of Concept (You have created something to show the innovation can work)

Problem: The menace caused by Solar flares on our local space weather continues to be worrisome. They create interference and distortions in communication systems, navigation systems, spacecraft, geologic explorations and pipelines. They destabilize human chromosomes, causes cancer and a host of other health problems. The hazards cannot be over emphasized since solar flares are solar cycle dependent, hence affecting the element of climate such as temperature, rainfall, pressure etc, and hence all aspects of human life. All these effects are setbacks to our society in terms of civilization and health issues. Installation of Supper SID monitor will monitor and create awareness on when strong flares occur for precautionary and redress measures to be taken for the entire society.

Unique Selling Point: There has not been any already or ongoing work on monitoring these solar phenomena at Owerri. The impact of solar phenomena on the Earth’s surface keeps reoccurring all over the nation especially Southern part of the Country, Owerri to be precise. The hazards of solar flares cannot be over emphasized since solar flares are solar cycle dependent, affecting the element of climate such as temperature, rainfall, pressure etc., hence all aspects of human life. Thus, in order to effectively address the challenges of solar flares and other solar phenomena, there is a need to install this Super SID Monitor and use it to collect data and carry out analysis for a better management of these solar phenomena at Owerri and its environ. Provision of data for the weather forecast and further research work will determine the success of this work. The proposed study creates a research collaboration with amateur astronomers/researchers to generate data that can help interpret solar flares phenomenon at Owerri and have a future plan of weather management for a better society.
