I
Novel, Eco-friendly Anti-corrosive Paints

Innovations Item Code: IN-2024-2100190

Sector: Environmental sustainability/Circular economy

Description:

The innovation is about alleviating the challenges of corrosion in various sectors in industries. Industrial coatings play a significant role in our every day use of machinery and equipment. Steel corrosion therefore, has become a major challenge in many industrial facilities.  Meanwhile, anticorrosive pigments such as Zinc chromate that are most frequently used in paint formulation are potentially toxic to humans and the environment. Industrial machinery and equipment having steel components are susceptible to corrosion thereby, significantly increasing the running cost of steel and oil companies. The advent of climate change has introduced a new layer of complexity to this challenge. As the world faces unpredictable weather patterns and increased exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays, the emphasis on protective coatings that can reflect these rays becomes even more pronounced. With these evolving threats, safeguarding the longevity and durability of industrial equipment has never been more crucial. To this end, I have used green technology to formulate paints that can prevent corrosion. This has been tested and results are available.

Stage of Innovation: MVP (You have a product ready to go to the market)

Problem:

In the course of  industrial operations, the surfaces of most metals are severely corroded to varying degrees. The problem I'm trying to solve is the alleviation of this corrosion to preserve costly machinery in homes and industries. Also, to mitigate the corrosion effect and prolong the life span of metallic materials.

Unique Selling Point: Scientists have introduced inhibitors to the corrosive environment during industrial processes. The use of corrosion inhibitor is the most convenient, simple and possible method to protect metallic materials in corrosive environments. In recent times, environmental regulations have gradually restricted the use of inorganic inhibitors, especially those containing chromate, phosphate, and other heavy metals (Rodríguez-Torres et al., 2014). Several organic inhibitors have been reported to be unsafe and toxic to the environment. In my innovation, I have used green technology which is not only safe, but economical, successful, available and renewable.
