Sector: Renewable/Green Energy
Description:
KAMIM Technologies LTD is redesigning the agricultural system in Africa with its innovative product, Solar Cool (SoCool) Agro Hub. This transformative project is designed to directly address the critical challenges of food waste and energy access that plague smallholder farmers across Sub-Saharan Africa. By integrating solar-powered cold chain solutions with a comprehensive digital post-harvest management system, SoCool Agro Hub offers a sustainable, scalable, and economically viable model to enhance food security, improve farmer incomes, and reduce environmental impact.
Product Overview:
SoCool Agro Hub's core offering includes state-of-the-art, solar-powered cold storage facilities coupled with packhouses for quality control. These facilities are specifically designed to service rural and off-grid farming communities where access to reliable energy and proper storage facilities is scarce. The project leverages renewable energy to decrease dependence on unreliable and expensive diesel generators, thereby cutting costs and carbon footprints.
Impact:
The initiative is set to drastically reduce post-harvest losses, which currently result in up to 55% of food wastage in the region. By improving the longevity and quality of agricultural produce, SoCool Agro Hub ensures that crops reach markets in optimal condition, thereby increasing market value and reducing food shortages. This has a direct positive impact on the livelihoods of smallholder farmers, who are often the most vulnerable to fluctuations in agricultural yields and market prices.
Why Support is Needed:
Support from investors and partners is crucial to scale SoCool Agro Hub's operations from pilot phases to a broader implementation across Nigeria and eventually, other parts of Africa. Financial investment will be channelled into expanding infrastructure, enhancing technological capabilities, and rolling out the solution to more communities. Technical support is also sought to refine the integration of solar technologies and digital platforms.
SoCool Agro Hub by KAMIM Technologies LTD represents a forward-thinking solution to a longstanding problem, combining innovation in renewable energy with critical agricultural needs. With proven pilot results and a clear vision for scalability, the project is well-positioned to make a substantial impact on food security and economic stability in Africa. Support for this initiative means investing in a sustainable future, where technology and renewable energy drive agricultural advancement and environmental stewardship.
Stage of Innovation: MVP (You have a product ready to go to the market)
Problem:
Nigeria, the agricultural sector faces significant challenges that undermine its efficiency and sustainability, particularly due to significant post-harvest losses stemming from inadequate storage and cooling facilities. This issue is further exacerbated by an unreliable power supply, which is critical for powering storage units essential for preserving perishable goods. As a result, a substantial amount of produce spoils before it can reach the market, affecting smallholder farmers the most. For instance, the yearly demand for tomatoes is over 2 million tons, yet 700,000 tons of the 1.5 million tons produced perish due to lack of preservation/storage.
The situation is aggravated by steady power-supply issues which affect all businesses in Nigeria, irrespective of their type or class. The agricultural sector, which employs 40% of Nigeria’s labor force and contributes to 21% of GDP, faces significant hurdles due to this unreliable power and inadequate post-harvest storage infrastructures. In some urban areas, small-capacity storage units are powered by fossil fuels, which are both costly and environmentally damaging.
Additionally, the inefficiency in the supply chain, marked by the inability to store and aggregate produce effectively, forces many buyers to rely on costly imports rather than supporting local production. This not only impacts the economic stability of the agricultural sector but also stresses Nigeria's foreign exchange reserves.
Smallholders cannot aggregate stock efficiently, and middlemen/wholesalers struggle to provide sufficient quantities to demanding bulk buyers, which compels these buyers to import from large farms abroad where adequate aggregation and preservation are possible due to better power supply.
The problem facing the Nigerian agricultural market is a complex interplay of inadequate cold storage facilities, unreliable power supply, environmental concerns, and inefficient supply chains, all of which lead to high post-harvest losses, reduced income for farmers, increased food prices, and escalated importation costs
Unique Selling Point: Unique Selling Proposition: Product offering: Unlike other projects in the market, SoCool Agro Hub integrates both hardware (solar-powered cold storage) and software (digital management platforms) to provide a holistic solution that not only preserves perishable goods but also enhances the overall food supply chain efficiency. Our cold rooms are also integrated with a packhouse to ensure a proper post-harvest management system. This triple approach ensures end-to-end traceability and quality control, setting it apart from conventional cold chain solutions. Business Model: We a cutting access barriers to our product through an innovative business model 'energy as a service'. We understand that our primary target market - the majority of smallholder farmers - cannot afford our products through an upfront purchase so we build, own and operate the system and we only charge affordable fees for the cooling services on a weekly subscription model. through this business model, we have constant cash flow and we can break even in two years, retrieving the cost of capital and start making profit. We also make sales when we connect our users/farmers to off-takers through our digital platforms and earn commissions from their produce sales. We also make sales from our secondary target customers, the big farms and food businesses that can afford the upfront purchase of our product.
