Abstract
Blind individuals encounter difficulties when it comes to independently recognizing and handling currency bills. To address this issue, we propose an assistive device that combines real-time object recognition with communication capabilities. Our system aims to enhance the autonomy of blind users by providing accurate currency bill identification. The device continuously analyzes the video stream from a camera, recognizing currency bills based on visual cues.
Background
Existing assistive devices for the blind often rely on artificial vision. However, many separate systems can become impractical. Our goal was to create a versatile, portable device capable of recognizing currency bills, a common challenge faced by blind individuals. Unlike other systems that require capturing multiple images for recognition, our system performs continuous recognition on the video stream.
Design and Implementation
Our device utilizes bio-inspired image analysis software for real-time object recognition. Here are the key components:

I had an eye-opening experience in a cab when I noticed a blind woman struggling to pay her fare. She had to ask the conductor to confirm that the note she handed over was indeed a 500 naira bill. Later, when receiving her change, she needed reassurance on the denominations once again.
This encounter made me realize the challenges blind individuals face in distinguishing between different currency notes. Without tactile or audible features on paper money, they often rely on others for assistance, which can be inconvenient and sometimes unreliable.
Solution:
To address this issue, I'm working on a device that can recognize and audibly announce the denomination of various currencies. This innovation aims to empower blind individuals with the confidence to manage their finances more independently and accurately.
Unique Selling Point: What Are People Doing, and How Is Ours Different? Currently, there isn't a widely recognized solution specifically tailored for identifying Nigerian Naira banknotes. Our innovative money detection device aims to fill this gap by providing a specialized solution designed exclusively for Nigerian currency. The only machine similar to ours is the iBill in the United States of America and it uses OCR not like ours that uses a live camera Key Differentiators: Focused on Nigerian Naira: Our device is specifically designed to recognize and identify Nigerian Naira banknotes, addressing the unique challenges faced by blind and visually impaired individuals in Nigeria due to the lack of tactile features on the currency. Inclusive Design for Nigeria: By focusing on Nigerian Naira, we aim to create an inclusive and user-friendly device that empowers blind and visually impaired individuals in Nigeria to manage their finances independently and confidently. Local Language Support: We understand the importance of language diversity in Nigeria. Our device will support local languages, ensuring that users can interact with the device comfortably in their preferred language. Advanced Technology: Leveraging advanced technologies, including machine learning algorithms, our device aims to deliver enhanced accuracy and reliability in currency recognition, setting a new standard for accessibility in Nigeria.
